Fitness and Hobbies to elevate your style

People often believe that fashion exists in a vacuum. That style is not built, curated, acquired over time. But that myth is why so many people struggle with finding their true style and building a wardrobe that coincides with their life. It all starts with life.

As Vivienne Westwood said, “Fashion is very important. It is life-enhancing and, like everything that gives pleasure, it is worth doing well.”

Designers urge us to buy less and make sure the clothes we choose are ones we really love. They urge us to live in our clothes, make it last, and let it become a part of us. It’s amusing to see critics try to downplay fashion as superficial and frivolous, but even on it’s most basic level, fashion is quite literally life. We need to wear clothes each day to survive and assimilate into society (I wrote an awesome piece on the hierarchy of fashion that details this concept. Read here!!)

Clothing is meant to be lived in, not preserved like museum artifacts. Unless it is true archival fashion, your wardrobe should move with you, stretch with you, age with you.

So the better question is not “What’s my aesthetic?”It is “How do I actually live?”

If you are a college girl who does Pilates at 7 a.m., runs across campus all day, shoots creative projects, models on weekends, and still wants to look pulled together, your wardrobe will naturally reflect that rhythm. You will need movement, comfort, polish, and versatility. A corporate girl who spends her days in meetings and her weekends at tennis matches and galas will build something completely different.

Neither is more stylish, but this proves that your life dictates your wardrobe. This is why I use my Rule of 3 system and build slowly over time. A wardrobe should evolve the same way you do. Piece by piece. Season by season. Experience by experience.

The idea you should takeaway from this week’s Substack post is to remember that clothes are meant to be lived in! I personally love a little wear and tear here and there, some scuff marks, loose threads, and worn in leather. It adds personality to the piece, making it your own. An extension of you rather than a mere piece of clothing. It’s what sets you apart from the person next to you. Embrace your hobbies and lifestyle, and watch how you begin to develop your true taste. If you loved this post, please feel free to drop a like and leave a comment!
